AGANKAST Accused Of Insulting British Metal Fans By Pulling Out Of Contest
May 21, 2006Craig Keddie of Borders Today is reporting that AGANKAST — the new British metal band featuring former ATOMKRAFT guitarist Rob Matthew (a.k.a. Redhead) — this week sensationally snubbed followers of the rock music scene in Hawick, England.
The thrash four-piece revealed they would not be competing in Friday's (May 19) eagerly-anticipated Battle of the Bands finale in Hawick.
Borders-based rockers Matthew, Allan Scott, Drew Gill and Ciaran Scott came through several rounds of qualifying heats to reach the final, but decided to pull out last Sunday (May 14). Their decision has provoked a furious reaction from promoters Rockshow Live and fans alike and the band stand accused of running scared and selling out on local supporters.
Battle of the Bands spokesman Dug Scott blasted: "I'm told AGANKAST have pulled out because 'they've nothing to prove.' Translated, this means they will not take part in the final as they are not guaranteed to win.
"It's an unbelievably bizarre decision and an insult to all those bands who have participated in the competition. This sort of attitude won't get you far in the music business; it's a tough industry and will soon swallow you up and spit you out."
AGANKAST are said to be a "cult" band and play at venues across Britain on a weekly basis.
But Dug Scott of Rockshow Live is still not impressed, though, and is critical of band leader Rob Matthew.
He said: "The band claim they will no longer play in any Borders venues as none are big enough for them.
"We find it sad that a band who experienced their first gigs here in the Borders have turned their back on the whole local live music scene that got them started.
"I've heard that three of the band members wanted to gig in the final, but for some bizarre reason Mr. Redhead was against it. I'm disappointed with this and Rockshow Live will never deal with him again.
"Battle of the Bands has been a phenomenal success and not wanting to be part of it is just stupid. The future of AGANKAST, in my opinion, doesn't look too good."
